Female Police Officer’s Baton, Motherwell, 1930s

Black baton issued to female officers in the late 1930s. It belonged to Jean Thompson, one of the first policewomen in the newly formed Motherwell & Wishaw Burgh Police Force.

Later, Jean wore a uniform but it was far too big for her as only 3 sizes were available at that time. Jean was a policewomen during the war but later gave up her post. She never married and used to sleep with the baton by her bedside.
