George Cross Medal Awarded to John McCabe

16 year old John McCabe saved many lives from an inrush of peat and water ('moss') at Stanrigg Pit near Airdrie on 9 July 1918 by warning others. The disaster claimed 19 lives.

In the aftermath Mr McCabe was given an inscribed pocket watch by the Carnegie Hero Fund and was awarded the Edward Medal. In 1973 he exchanged the Edward Medal for a George Cross. Its whereabouts are not known but the family commissioned this copy which was presented to the museum service by John McCabe's grandson in 2018, the centenary of the disaster.
