Carpet Beating Machine, 1908
This large machine was installed in an upholsterer and cabinet-maker’s shop in North Berwick. This is a belt driven carpet beater: a central rotating shaft has straps attached to it which beat a carpet as it is fed through a slot in the side of the machine. Alexander Orr of Edinburgh ran a carpet cleaning business and then started to build machinery to his own patent. He made this one in 1908.
