Service Industries

High Street. Main Street. Bank, takeaway, pub. Butcher, clothing boutique, supermarket. ‘Bricks and mortar’ – or online? Beyond the farms and factories, there have always been a wide range of different industries and occupations that are needed for living – or to make life more enjoyable!

An assortment of different kinds of businesses arrived with the Industrial Revolution and the rise of North Lanarkshire’s towns and villages as we know them now. The museum collection reflects this, ranging from artefacts collected from a ‘time machine’ of a boarded-up 1920s shop in Holytown, to objects from the Airdrie Savings Bank – which at the time of closure in 2017 was the UK’s last independent savings bank.
