Explore our wartime collection to find out how ordinary people’s lives have been affected by war. Items relating to some of the key military campaigns and events feature, including the Battle of Loos, Battle of the Somme and D-Day. One of North Lanarkshire’s Victoria Cross Winners is represented with a collection of medals awarded to Corporal Clamp. Other significant items include shell fragments from the Arras Battlefield in 1917 and the uniform worn by Nan Graham, who was one of the first nurses ashore after D-Day.

The collection also illustrates the important contribution people made at home during times of conflict; working in munitions factories, raising money for the war effort and civil defence. Key items include war workers badges from Colville’s Steelworks and an HMS Glasgow Plaque presented to the people of Motherwell to commemorate the adoption of HMS Glasgow during County Warships Week in 1942.
