Working Life
The collection covers the main industries of Scotland with an emphasis on iron, steel, coal and engineering. It’s complemented by a collection of prime movers and objects connected with a range of ancillary industries, including confectionary manufacture, brickmaking, printing, textiles, banking, retail, gas and utilities.
Highlights of the collection include a colliery winding engine built in Coatbridge, a bar of Summerlee Ironwork’s pig iron and a Gibb and Hogg locomotive which is the only surviving locomotive to be built in North Lanarkshire.
The collection is of national significance; a record of the great industries that once thrived in Scotland and of the important contribution local people made to the industrial development of Scotland and beyond.
